Pegis Fashion Parade raises $7,000 for Day Centre Bus

When: 29th April 2008

On the 29th April, the Pegis Fashion Parade was held, it was a great night and raised around $7,000 which will be set aside along with the $15,000 funding from the DHS Disability Grant a replacement 20 seater bus for the Day Centre.

The Day Centre Staff and Auxiliary put in a mighty effort and catered for 160 (light meals) in addition to well over 100 extras for supper. It is estimated that there was 300 women in total at the event. The Ararat Football Club young players led by Dave Harman served the drinks as part of their community program and did a fantastic job.

Our EGHS models were:- Loraine Paterson, Jacinta Harman, Glenda Hamilton, Yvonne Byron, Kim Wooster and Jo Van Opstal. They were great and received lots of applause as they strutted gracefully down the catwalk in Pegis outfits, although Yvonne did say later 'She was not going to give up her day job at this stage!'

Importantly we must thank Pegis owners Helen Horvath and Emma Hitchcock who initially approached us as they wanted to do something to support EGHS.

Emma said: "Our family have experienced first hand the wonderful service provided by the Patricia Hinchey Day Centre, and the Autumn/ Winter Fashion Parade was an opportunity not only to promote our business but also put something back into the community, and the health service was an obvious choice.

The Day Centre currently has two commuter buses with wheelchair access which are used daily for the transporting of aged and people with a disability to and from their residents in Ararat to the centre.  The vehicles are also used regularly by people from the Day Centre, Garden View Court Hostel and Lowe Street for access to community activities, outings in and around Ararat, plus for special day trips outside the area (eg: Ballarat Shopping Day).

Since 2004, with the purchase of a second bus the Day Centre has been able to assist the Willaura Day Centre once a week, in addition to helping service the rural smaller towns of Elmhurst, Willaura, Moyston and Lake Bolac all being part of the Ararat municipality. The original bus, which is now over 10 years old, is still in use but only within Ararat. It has done over 130,000 km, needs frequent maintenance, is noisy, rough to ride in and is in need of replacing. Basically the bus has passed its ‘used by' date.
