'Make a Move - No Falls' Program

11th June, 2008

East Grampians Health Service Physiotherapy Department is developing a ‘Make a Move- Fight Falls' program.  One in three Australians over 65 experience at least one fall a year.

As the population is getting older, frailer, and often living at home longer, this is a timely program introduction, which will be of much benefit to the community.

The program is aimed at community members living at home whom have had a fall, or are at risk of falling.  The program is funded by the Victorian Department of Human Services - Rural & Regional Health & Aged Care Services.

To attend the ‘Make a Move - Fight Falls' program participants can be referred by Physiotherapy, Medical Centre, District Nursing, other Allied Health Practitioners or a Day Centre.  Participants can also refer themselves if they feel that they may benefit from the program.

Once the referral is made, the participant needs to attend an assessment with the Physiotherapist before beginning the class. The fight falls classes will be held on a Friday afternoon from 2 - 3pm in the Physiotherapy Department which is located on the first floor of the Acute Hospital.

Exercises will include balance, strength, general fitness and eye exercises.  Participants will also be given home exercises to continue in between classes. These are proven exercises that show a reduction in the rate of falls and the severity of falls.

The ‘Make a Move-Fight Falls' Program also gives participants the opportunity to chat with the Dietician twice throughout the program to address any nutrition issues that may be contributing to their falls.

The Falls Program commences on the 13th of June, and for further info please contact East Grampians Health Service Physiotherapy department Tel: 5352 9347.
