Birds Eye View of a Fish Pond

22nd July, 2008

Birds Eye View of a Fish PondAn initial connection between the East Grampians Health Service Patricia Hinchey Day Centre and group of Marian College Year 9 Students has led to the recent presentation of special piece of artwork ‘Birds Eye View of a Fish Pond' created by the students to the people who attend the Day Centre.

The students, who have, over a number of visits to the Day Centre, built up a strong repore with a number of women through sharing stories of the old days in the district, decided with their coordinator Lauren Shea that they would like to give something back to the Day Centre as a memento of their visits and new friendships.

A specially organised arts workshop for the students was established at Marian College and with visiting Arts Facilitator Val McCann the students got to work to create a one theme project.

Students worked with large pieces of quality art paper that was eventually joined together to form a bird's eye view of a fish pond complete with fish, frogs, dragonflies, water lilies, lily pad and  butterflies.

The background was created with a watercolour/gladwrap technique and the various features formed a third paper effect resulting in the completed artworks being lively, bright, colourful and eye catching.

Throughout the creation of the artwork students have been able to develop their own components into the theme and have also been shown many experimental techniques with painted surfaces which can be used if they continue into the future with their art studies.

At the presentation of the mounted and framed ‘Birds Eye View From A Fish Pond' students outlined how the artwork was put together, and expressed how they, as a group, were really pleased to have had the opportunity. They also hoped the artwork would be an ongoing reminder for all to enjoy.

The Day Centre clients and volunteers were thrilled with being on the receiving end of such fine piece of artwork and thanked Marian College, students, teachers and the art facilitator for their contribution.

Following the presentation a get together light luncheon was shared by all involved.
