New CT Scanner at Hospital

7th April, 2011

East Grampians Health Service has partnered with Bendigo Radiology to provide CT scanning services in Ararat. Bendigo Radiology assisted with setting up these new services earlier this year.

CT scanning combines special x-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body. These cross-sectional images can then be examined on a computer monitor and a diagnosis achieved by a radiologist.

General Manager of Bendigo Radiology Ms. Sandy Chamberlin commented

"Bendigo Radiology already covers and supports 19 sites across Victoria. We will support East Grampians Health Service with ultrasound, ongoing training, workflow and efficiency support programs which will help with the integration phase of these new services.

All the images taken at East Grampians Health Service will be reported by Bendigo Radiologist's Doctor's using "PACS" Web based Radiology information Software which also gives the Doctors of Ararat access to the Radiology images. This technology is new for the local doctors, Doctors are able to view all new and previous images and reports.

Ms. Chamberlin said "Helen Watt, Director of Clinical Services at EGHS was eager to grow this service and so are Bendigo Radiology. CT scanning will provide a diagnostic modeling broader range of services in the community of Ararat and surrounding Districts."

Mrs. Watt said "Bendigo Radiology have lived up to the expectations of EGHS. They have been extremely supportive and proactive with regard to improving processes and services; so as an efficient service is available to respond to the needs of the Ararat community and its surrounds. We believe a CT scanner is a very important modality enabling the Doctor's access to further information to achieve successful treatment plans for our community."

The multislice CT scanner has the ability to image six slices at once..Reconstructions can be performed in multiple planes. An analogy of this scanning is like the patient being a  loaf of bread and not only taking a slice out of the loaf to examine it individually but being able to recontstruct the slice in all different directions. This multislice  CT scanning has huge benefits for doctors as it has the ability to perform  three dimensional volume than previous technology.

Ms. Chamberlin would like to thank East Grampians Health Service for their support in this new partnership with Bendigo Radiology. "We look forward to a successful future focused on Western Victoria."
