Breathe Easier with Support Group

11th January, 2011

The Ararat Respiratory Support Group run by the East Grampians health Service enjoys catching up every month for a coffee at the Community Health Centre. This group was set up to support all the people who have respiratory problems in their lives. In the Centre they share stories, share ideas and help each other manage the day to day problems that arise from having these conditions.

Mrs. Cheryl Haines East Grampians Health Service Nurse said "respiratory problems can include long term disorders such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and bronchiectasis."

Mrs. Haines explained that "this is such an important group to have in our community for those who have respiratory conditions. The group gets together every month to chat, sometimes for lunch, or to listen to a guest speaker; they just feel comfortable and enjoy one another's company, which is great. Sometimes the constraints of their condition cause people to tend to stay at home more often, but this group give them the opportunity to socialize on a regular basis with others who understand".

Cheryl stated that "Generally people come to the group after they have been through our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program but it's not a pre requisite. Sometimes couples will start to attend after one partner has attended Rehab. We welcome anyone who feels it would be of benefit to them."
