Brumby and Helper support the redevelopment of Pyrenees House
19th November, 2010
The Brumby Government if re-elected will contribute $300,000 funding towards the redevelopment of Pyrenees House at East Grampians Health Service, for Rippon, Hon Joe Helper MP, announced on Thursday 18th November.
Mr Helper said "the redevelopment would see the transformation of Pyrenees House into a first-class new medical education and training facility. Pyrenees House is an iconic part of Ararat and with the Brumby Labor Government's support will remain that way into the future."
Pyrenees House was designed and built in 1886 in the Queen Anne style, including a prominent tower and elaborate external detailing, the building served as a general hospital replacing its 1860 predecessor. In 1901, the hospital was registered as a training school for nurses. When a new hospital was built right next door in 1937, it was remodelled to serve first as an aged care facility and is currently used for administration offices.
The redevelopment will see Pyrenees House return t o its roots as educational and training facility for medical, dental and nursing undergraduate and postgraduate students in Ararat.
Mr Helper went on to comment that" As part of East Grampians Health Service 150th Anniversary Celebrations earlier this year, I was pleased to announce a $5,500 Victorian Heritage Council grant towards the preservation of Pyrenees House".
Mr Helper applauded EGHS, Ararat community and Council for their strong advocacy and support for the redevelopment of Pyrenees House.
