"Common Threads" to get underway
1st December, 2007

East Grampians Health Service will host another unique project – ‘Common Threads’ which will commence in February and involve the Willaura and District Quilters working with patients, carers, families, volunteers and staff in the Oncology Unit at the Ararat Hospital.
The Oncology Unit waiting room, will each Tuesday morning, transform into a working area where the quilters will work with participants to create a specially designed Log Cabin Quilt which will feature bright autumn colours. It is anticipated that it will take three months to complete the quilt and then it will be hung in the area.
With the recent completion of the ‘Sharing the Journey’ Project, there are over 20 artworks together with redgum and limestone sculptures that now feature throughout the Oncology Unit, and the addition of the quilt will add another dimension to the area.
The Willaura & District Quilters began back in 1990 when six girls were taught the skills by Sandie Rankin. Many names and faces have passed through the group as people have moved in and out of the district. At present there are around 15 women primarily with Willaura addresses.
Since commencing the group have completed many Quilts individually as well combining together to produce a single item. The combined efforts have been given as presents for new babies, to replace a damaged quilt, or as farewell presents for members of the group.
